Kenya’s biggest Referral Hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is subject to controversy yet gain for a surgery gone awry.
This is after cries of a new mother got the attention of the media after a cesarean surgery left her with ruptured organs after delivering twins.
Following her surgery, Susan Nekesa lost one of her twins and as if to add to her loss, her health took a downward spiral.
Doctors later discovered that a horrifying mistake occurred during surgery that left her intestines misplaced.
“It was discovered that the operation was done badly, her small intestines, a portion of it around 50 centimeters, was in the wrong place,” her husband said.
As a result of the surgery mishap, Nekesa underwent a colostomy and now has colostomy bags attached to her.
A colostomy is a surgical procedure that brings one end of the large intestine out through an opening made in the abdominal wall.
Because of the shortage of staff, the new mother has been nursing herself including emptying her colostomy bags.
